The seeds for Skyy were sown in Brooklyn, New York in 1973, when sisters Denise, Delores, and Bonne Dunning first met musician Solomon Roberts, Jr. The record producer/keyboardist Randy Muller (who was also a member Brass Construction and an arranger for B.T. By 1976, the Skyy lineup of the three Dunning sisters as vocalists, Roberts as the male vocalist/guitarist, Anibal Anthony Sierra on guitars and keyboards, Larry Greenberg on keyboards, Gerald Lebon on bass, and Tommy McConnell on drums had solidified.

In the late 1970s, Skyy signed to Salsoul Records. After several albums that saw moderate success in the R&B market, the group crossed over to the mainstream in a big way with the release of the Skyy Line album in late 1981. Featured on this album was the single "Call Me," which gave the group their first (and only, to date) top 40 hit on the pop charts, peaking at #26 in 1982. It also became the first of several #1 R&B hits for Skyy. Meanwhile, the group continued to record for the Salsoul label up through the release of their 1984 Inner City album (Salsoul would fold in 1985), scoring several additional hits on the R&B chart during that time.

In the mid-1980s, the group signed with Capitol Records and released their next album, From the Left Side in 1986. Apart from the top ten R&B single, "Givin' It (to You)," the album saw limited success, and the group left Capitol soon thereafter.

Things were looking rather bleak for the band by the late 1980s. However, after signing to Atlantic Records, Skyy launched a major comeback in 1989 with the release of their successful Start of a Romance album. This release spun off two #1 R&B singles, with both the title track ("Start of a Romance") and the Quiet Storm classic, "Real Love" claiming the top spot. "Real Love" also became the group's second and final crossover pop hit peaking at #47 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in early 1990. The second single released from the album (between the title track and "Real Love"), "Love All the Way" also cracked the R&B top 50. By the release of the Nearer to You album in 1992, the hits had again dried up, and the band has not released a new studio album since then.

The album cover may look sort of spooky & mysterious (Gives me the creeps, sometimes, but what a great-looking model), but as the saying goes, you can never judge a book by its cover. This 1982 Polydor/PolyGram release by Shakatak was one of the group's best R&B/Jazz recordings at that time.

music with this amalgam of rhythms, but the CD is easy listening. Charming, even after a dozen spins.

t’s pretty amazing that a music scene as short-lived and ill-defined as “shoegaze” could have such a lasting effect. Named, to the bands’ chagrin, for the disinterested way they would look down
at their feet while playing, the “shoegazers” created ethereal, often majestic sounds by camouflaging their guitars with layers of effects until they sounded more like synthesizers.



The style had its roots going back to texturalists like Brian Eno and Robert Fripp, and was more directly influenced by boundary-pushing indie pop bands like Felt, Cocteau Twins, Kitchens of
Distinction, and the Jesus and Mary Chain. The British “indie dance” craze of the early 1990s gave the shoegazers a ticket to brief stardom, in the UK at least. The sculpted guitar haze worked
surprisingly well with the then-prevalent shuffle rhythms. You could count the major shoegaze bands, all of them British, on one hand. Ride, Slowdive, Lush, and Chapterhouse are the usual
suspects, though there were others, some lumped in erroneously because the critics had nothing better to do. When the Happy Mondays and Jesus Jones faded from public favor, the shoegazers
followed. The scene was dead faster than you could say “Britpop”.



Yet it never exactly died. The original bands split up, but others started to spring up in the mid-1990s. Curiously, many were American. There seemed to be a consistent audience for bands that
inverted the guitar noise of hard rock and turned it into something pretty and ponderous. The rise of electronic dance music gave these bands a new platform for their effects racks and reverb.
And that’s pretty much where things stand, 15 years later.



The New York band Soundpool have been compared to Slowdive, but that really wasn’t fair. On the evidence of their first two albums, Soundpool simply weren’t nearly as good as that. You can’t just
take a mysterious, pretty girl with a pretty voice, add those guitars, and end up with something substantial. Yes, you still have to have songs. And few of Soundpool’s made a lasting
impression.



With Mirrors in Your Eyes, Soundpool have decided to emphasize the disco beats that have always been an element of their music. A good, clean beat that you can dance to can cover a lot of
songwriting shortcomings, but leaders John Ceparano and Kim Field have improved in that area, too. This is still mostly in-one-ear-out-the-other stuff, but it provides a pleasurable, danceable
experience while it’s there. Mirrors in Your Eyes is a very cool-sounding album, and that goes a long way. It could have come out ten years ago, or 15 years ago. Whether that’s a compliment
depends on your perspective.



A crucial key to Mirrors in Your Eyes is that the electronic rhythms work. They’re crisp, sharp, and well-produced, retro rather than dated. Soundpool have gone all-in with the dance thing, too.
These are big, club-ready beats, and better for it. The title track opens the album with a blast of filtered noise and what sounds like an actual synth, before the beat and a surprisingly funky
disco bassline kick in. Field’s thin but beguiling voice slots in beneath the barrage, just where you’d expect it. This is the formula from which Soundpool work for the rest of the album, and
most of the time it succeeds.



The centerpiece is “Makes No Sense”, which finds the all the album’s strongest elements coming together in one three-minute capsule of bliss. With a pounding four-on-the-floor rhythm, acid
bassline, melancholy synths, and interplanetary guitars, the song sounds like someone held up a tape recorder in the middle of a packed club in 1992 while Saint Etienne was blaring. In other
words, glorious. Elsewhere, “Kite of Love” and “Listen” work a more jazzy vibe, while “I’m So Tired” spins out into space in almost gothic fashion.



Inevitably, Mirrors in Your Eyes begins to suffer from some the tracks’ similar template. Some songs go on too long, lost in their own haze. But the only real dud is the limp Jesus and Mary Chain
redux, where Ceparano takes over the vocals. Otherwise, Soundpool’s dancefloor excursion makes a pretty good case for shoegaze’s longevity.

On n’a pas si souvent que ça l’occasion de baisser les vitres de la 309 GTI ,de mettre l’autoradio à fond et de faire cracher le boomer en écoutant un bon vieux disque de dance music. L’occasion
nous en est donnée avec le troisième album de Chromeo  qui se présente, tout simplement, comme le disque le plus fun de la rentrée 2010 !

Composé de deux canadiens, Chromeo joue une musique electro funk disco retro, assez irrésistible, comme a pu l’être en son temps celle des Rythmes Digitales sur l’album Dark dancer, ou encore
l’electro pop régressive et jouissive du moins connus, mais non moins fameux, DMX Krew.

Après un fameux "DJ Kicks" paru en 2009, dans lequel le duo "Dave 1 + Pee Thug" faisait valoir ses références disco 80’s, Chromeo revient dans les mêmes dispositions avec un album produit cette
fois par Zdar, alors que les deux précédentes l’avaient été par Tiga.

Guitares Rock FM, rythmes disco endiablés, synthés vintage, refrains et gimmicks hits des clubs estampillé 1985, le duo s’amuse comme un fou avec les clichés 80 ‘s et persiste dans un genre où il
est passé maitre, à savoir l’art du recyclage toujours à la limite du mauvais gout. Mais justement, leur grande force est de ne jamais sombrer dans le mauvais gout et de toujours trouver le
parfait équilibre pour que leur musique reste parfaitement écoutable et digeste de bout en bout. Résultat on écoutera "Business Casual" en boucle encore pendant une paire de jours.

 !!! (chk chk chk) est une exception sur l'échiquier warpien mais !!! est une exception tout court. Comment réussir à cataloguer un groupe dont la musique n'arrive jamais à se figer ? Si
Warp  a mis la main sur le groupe, ce n'était pas dans un délire d'ouverture au rock mais plutôt dans l'idée de démontrer que ce genre peut parfois exploser dans tous les sens.



!!! du disco-punk ? Trop réducteur. De l'électro-funk ? Trop synthétique. !!! n'est rien d'autre qu'une partouze musicale ayant pour unique but de vous faire bouger le cul comme Funkadelic en son
temps.



Depuis Myth Takes en 2007, le groupe a subit des contrecoups : mort de son batteur Jerry Fuchs, départ du bassiste Justin Van Der Volgen ainsi que du guitariste Tyler Pope. C'est désormais le
chanteur Nic Offer qui mène la troupe de déglingués. Car !!! prend toute sa mesure en live et devient alors, modestement, une des plus grosses machines à danser qui puisse exister. Le leader
donne de son corps comme personne. J'ai souvenir d'un concert démentiel à 3h du mat' au Summercase de Barcelone en 2007, le chanteur arrivant sur scène en vélo, gobant un taz devant le public et
démarrant son concert à 2000 à l'heure avant de vomir sur scène. Sous l'impulsion disco-funk du groupe, le public était devenu totalement hystérique. Grand moment !



Sur disque, la sauce prend aussi mais avec moins d'immédiateté. Même si on y gagne une meilleure cohérence dans la structure des morceaux, on y perd malheureusement cette énergie primaire
produite par le collectif. Strange Weather, Isn't It ? est le quatrième album des Californiens et les habitués ne seront pas dépaysés.



!!! a pour principe d'appliquer les codes de la musique de club dans ses morceaux. C'est relativement simple, on installe l'ambiance et quand vous êtes bien mûrs, on fait tout péter. Les montées
sont donc récurrentes avec ce côté extasié qui vous colle le sourire et les bras en l'air. Strange Weather, Isn't It ? joue sur sa basse funky et sa batterie épileptique (Paul Quattrone
remplaçant le défunt) pour vous maintenir sous pression. Ca groove sec dans votre caleçon et ça vous fait transpirer à grosses gouttes.



Le refrain facile suivi d'une longue montée, renvoyant la space-disco dans ses cordes, de The Most Certain Sure permet de retrouver immédiatement l'énergie du groupe. La voix de Nic Offer se met
en retrait pour mieux laisser les instruments prendre l'ascendant. Résultat : quand les cuivres se mêlent à la voix soul de Shannon Fuchess sur Wannagain Wannagain, ça groove comme jamais. Même
quand !!! expérimente avec le tribal Hollow, porté uniquement par la batterie, ça fonctionne à plein régime. Et en clôturant l'album par la gigantesque montée électro imparable de The Hammer, on
finit en nage. Alors même si le groupe reste bloqué sur ses acquis, on est conquis une fois de plus.



Strange Weather, Isn't It ? ne sera pas l'album de l'année mais on s'en fout du moment que le plaisir est là. Le but premier de !!! est de provoquer l'hystérie en live en vous faisant danser
jusqu'à épuisement. L'idée que la musique n'est parfois qu'un simple plaisir hédoniste se vérifie une fois de plus avec ce groupe hors-norme.

 !!! (chk chk chk) est une exception sur l'échiquier warpien mais !!! est une exception tout court. Comment réussir à cataloguer un groupe dont la musique n'arrive jamais à se figer ? Si
Warp  a mis la main sur le groupe, ce n'était pas dans un délire d'ouverture au rock mais plutôt dans l'idée de démontrer que ce genre peut parfois exploser dans tous les sens.



!!! du disco-punk ? Trop réducteur. De l'électro-funk ? Trop synthétique. !!! n'est rien d'autre qu'une partouze musicale ayant pour unique but de vous faire bouger le cul comme Funkadelic en son
temps.
